Two ways up

Start here, knowing nothing
Most explanations of this faith start in the middle. They assume you already know what sin means, or why a cross matters. This one does not.
The first claim is not that a god exists. It is that the one who exists is someone — with a mind, a voice, and a character you can come to know. You can stop at any point. Nothing here asks you to pretend.
The Bible does not open with an argument. It does not try to prove God. It just says what he did, in one short line.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Three lines later he speaks. That is the whole point. A force does not speak. Weather does not speak. Something that speaks can be answered.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
A man named Paul once had to explain all this to a city that had never heard any of it. That is the closest thing in the Bible to where you may be standing right now. He did not start with rules. He started with how close God is.
God intended that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.

What the Bible actually is
The Bible is a library. Sixty-six books, written over about 1,500 years, by kings and farmers and fishermen, a doctor, a tax man. It reads like a rulebook only if you open it in the wrong place.
Read start to finish it is one story with one plot. Jesus said the whole thing was pointing somewhere, and that he was where it pointed.
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself.

A world gets made on purpose. Not by accident. God looks at it and calls it good. People are made last, and made like him.
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

People decide they would rather be their own god. The trust tears. And everything downstream of it tears too — us from him, us from each other, us from ourselves.
But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”

This is the part of the story Jesus is. God does not send a message. He comes himself. He lives the life we could not live and takes what we had coming.
But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

It does not end with people escaping somewhere else. It ends with God coming down to live here, and everything broken made new.
And the One seated on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.”
If you remember one thing from this page, make it the shape: good, broken, rescued, put right. Everything else hangs on it.

How he introduces himself
Most of the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, which reads right to left. God is not given one name in it. He is given many, and each one shows up at the moment somebody needed that exact thing to be true.
These are not titles thought up by scholars. They are mostly what people called him after he turned up.

Elohim
Elohim
God — the strong one, the maker
The very first word for God in the Bible. It is grammatically plural but takes singular verbs, which is why translators render it “God,” not “gods.”
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
YHWH
The LORD — the personal name
Four Hebrew letters, no vowels written. Out of reverence, Jewish readers say “Adonai” (Lord) in its place, which is why most English Bibles print LORD in small capitals. It is a name, not a title.
God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.
Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh
I AM WHO I AM
God’s answer when Moses asked what to call him. Not a description of what he does — a statement that he simply is, and does not depend on anything.
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
El Roi
The God who sees me
Spoken by Hagar — a pregnant, runaway slave alone in a desert. She is the first person in the Bible to give God a name, and this is the name she chose.
So Hagar gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I have seen the One who sees me!”
El Shaddai
God Almighty
Used when God makes promises that are humanly impossible — here, a child to a couple in their nineties.
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty. Walk before Me and be blameless.
El Elyon
God Most High
The name used in front of foreign kings. It says: not one god among many, but the highest.
and he blessed Abram and said: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,
El Olam
The Everlasting God
Planted alongside a tree in the desert — a name for the God who outlasts everything you can see.
And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.
YHWH Yireh
The LORD will provide
Named on a mountain, at the moment a substitute appeared in place of a son. Christians have read that mountain forward ever since.
And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”
YHWH Rapha
The LORD who heals you
Given at a spring of bitter water that was made drinkable.
saying, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and pay attention to His commands, and keep all His statutes, then I will not bring on you any of the diseases I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”
YHWH Nissi
The LORD is my banner
A banner is what an ancient army rallied around when it was scattered and afraid.
And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner.
YHWH Shalom
The LORD is peace
Built as an altar by a frightened man hiding in a winepress. Shalom is not calm; it is wholeness, nothing missing.
So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
YHWH Roi
The LORD is my shepherd
Written by a former shepherd who knew exactly how much a sheep cannot do for itself.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
YHWH Tsidkenu
The LORD our righteousness
Not “the LORD who demands righteousness” — the LORD who IS our righteousness, on our behalf.
In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is His name by which He will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.
YHWH Shammah
The LORD is there
The last words of Ezekiel, and the name of a city. The whole story is heading toward a place where God simply is present.
The perimeter of the city will be 18,000 cubits, and from that day on the name of the city will be: THE LORD IS THERE.”
Qadosh
Holy
The only attribute in Scripture said three times over. Holy means set apart — utterly unlike anything else.
And they were calling out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.”
El Gibbor
Mighty God
Given to a child. Isaiah hands a newborn four titles, and one of them is the word for a warrior God.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
YHWH Tseva’ot
The LORD of Hosts
Hosts means armies — the ranks of heaven. It is the name used when the odds on the ground look bad.
Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts at Shiloh, where Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD.

The LORD who sets you apart
Given with the sabbath. The rest itself was the sign that a people belonged to him.
“Tell the Israelites, ‘Surely you must keep My Sabbaths, for this will be a sign between Me and you for the generations to come, so that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you.
El Chai
The living God
Said at a flooded river before anyone crossed it. Living, as opposed to the carved gods of everyone nearby.
He continued, “This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that He will surely drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites.
Qanna
Jealous
An uncomfortable name, and he chose it himself. Not petty jealousy — the jealousy of someone who will not share a marriage.
For you must not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
Tsur
The Rock
Moses’ word in his last song. Not scenery — the thing you stand on when everything else moves.
He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just. A God of faithfulness without injustice, righteous and upright is He.
Magen
Shield
Spoken to a frightened man who had just won a battle and expected reprisal.
After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”
Go’ali
My Redeemer
Said by a man who had lost his children, his health and his standing, and had not yet got any of it back.
But I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the end He will stand upon the earth.

Father
Isaiah reaches for it in the middle of a national disaster. The potter image comes in the same breath.
But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are the potter; we are all the work of Your hand.
El Bethel
The God of the house of God
Jacob names a place after the God who met him there, years after he first ran through it.
There Jacob built an altar, and he called that place El-bethel, because it was there that God had revealed Himself to Jacob as he fled from his brother.
One name governs the rest. When Moses asked what to call him, the answer was not a description. It was existence itself, spoken in the first person.
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

The part everyone finds strange
Christians hold two things at once and refuse to drop either. There is one God, not three. And the Father is God, Jesus is God, and the Holy Spirit is God.
The oneness is not up for grabs. It is the oldest line in Jewish prayer, and Jesus quoted it himself.
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One.
The word Trinity is not in the Bible. It is later shorthand for what the Bible keeps doing anyway. The honest way to see it is to put the claims side by side.
Every line is said of all three. That is why Christians say one God.

Because they talk to each other. One sends. One is sent. One is given. The difference is not what they are. It is what each one does.
The one who sends. He is never sent. He plans the rescue and gives the Son.
John 3:16
The one who is sent, and who becomes human. He is the only one of the three who has a body, a birthday, and a grave he walked out of.
Philippians 2:7
The one who is sent by the Father in the Son’s name, and who comes to live inside people rather than merely alongside them.
John 14:26
And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!”
Nobody says this is easy. It is less a puzzle to solve than a person to meet. And it is the difference between a God who sends help and a God who comes himself.

The turn in the middle of the story
The Bible’s word for the break is sin. It does not mainly mean breaking rules. It means aiming at the wrong thing — living as if you were the centre. Its reach is total, which is oddly level: nobody is further along than anybody else.
If the problem were not knowing enough, God could have sent facts. If it were bad behaviour, he could have sent rules. He had already sent rules. The problem was a broken relationship, and you do not fix those with a memo.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
So he came himself. That is the line that separates this from every other religion. Not that we climbed up. That he came down.
The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
He got hungry. He got tired. He cried at a friend’s grave. Two words in the Bible say it best.
Jesus wept.
Then the sky went out. Two of the four gospels stop to tell you the time of day.
From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
At the ninth hour he called out. Not a calm death. A cry, with a question in it.
At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.
Here is what Christians say was happening. He took what belonged to us. He handed over what belonged to him. It is called the exchange.
God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
Then the grave did not hold. The oldest summary of Christian belief we have is older than any of the four gospels, and it is four short lines long.
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
He is not here; He has risen, just as He said! Come, see the place where He lay.

The word used most and explained least
It is not mainly about going somewhere when you die. It is about a broken relationship being mended now, with dying no longer being the end of it.
The word that matters is gift. Every other system in the world is earned. This one is not, and the reason given is plain: so that nobody can boast about it.
For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God,
What is asked back is not a performance. It is trust, said out loud. That is all the word faith means. Not being sure of everything. Trusting someone.
that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
And what it makes you is not a member or a customer. The word used is family.
But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—
If you have spent your life assuming you are too far gone for this, sit with the next two lines. They are not a claim that you did nothing wrong. They are about what is no longer being counted.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
